Our Organization

Laubach Literacy Ontario (LLO) is a volunteer-driven, non-profit charitable organization dedicated to increasing literacy in Ontario, guided by the principle of "Each one Teach One".  LLO is a Literacy and Basic Skills program funded by the Government of Ontario.  LLO has been in existence since 1981 and incorporated since 1992.

Mission

Laubach Literacy Ontario provides training, resources and services to meet the changing needs of our members and adult students to create a stronger, more literate Ontario.

An Ontario where all adults have accessible and relevant opportunities to enhance their lives through literacy.

Values

1.      We value adult learning principles: we learn with purpose, we learn through experience, we learn and express our knowledge in different ways, and we are exploratory.
2.      We value accountability to our community and transparency in our decision-making.
3.      We work in collaborations and partnerships because we value how diverse perspectives make our organization stronger and our work more relevant.
4.      We value knowledge that comes from research, practice and experience.
5.      We value the knowledge of people who learn in literacy programs. We engage with students and encourage leadership and knowledge mobilization in order to strengthen people and the literacy field.
6.      We value the knowledge of people who work and volunteer in literacy programs. We create opportunities for peer mentorship, peer review and peer-to-peer knowledge exchange in training, certification, at workshops and at conferences.

Membership

LLO is a provincial network of 72 members, most of which are community-based literacy agencies. Organizational members also include 8 school board programs, 6 native literacy programs, a local Learning Disabilities Association, a college program, a deaf literacy program, a Community Living program a prison literacy program, and a national literacy organization.
 
Organizational members provide literacy delivery services in Ontario; are not-for-profit agencies (or affiliated with a not-for-profit agency) and support the mission, aims and purposes of Laubach Literacy Ontario  Through Laubach-affiliated programs, tutors and literacy practitioners provide one-to-one and small group instruction for more than 4,000 adult students annually. These students want to upgrade their literacy and essential skills based on their goals.
 
LLO supports its member agencies with a training and accreditation system for tutors and tutor-trainers, training resources, and annual professional development events. Our Laubach Enhanced Training System ensures wide transferability of learning from program to program for the adult student for most geographic locations in the province. LLO provides an annual conference with workshops of interest to literacy practitioners, volunteer tutors and literacy students.
 
LLO also has 8 associate members--which is any organization, business or individual supportive of the mission, aims and purposes of LLO.
